Setting up an eSIM sounds technical, but it is genuinely one of the simplest things you will do on your phone. The entire process takes about 2 minutes, and you do not need any technical knowledge. Here is exactly how it works on both iPhone and Android.
Before You Start
Make sure your device is eSIM-compatible (iPhone XS or later, Pixel 3 or later, Samsung S20 or later), you have a stable WiFi or data connection for the initial download, and you have purchased your ROAMR eSIM plan. That last part takes about 30 seconds on our website.
Step 1: Purchase Your Plan
Browse our destinations, pick the data plan that matches your trip, and complete checkout. You will receive a QR code and activation details instantly via email and in your ROAMR dashboard.
Step 2: Open Your Phone Settings
On iPhone, go to Settings then Cellular then Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan on older iOS versions). On Android, go to Settings then Network and Internet then SIMs then Add eSIM. The exact menu path varies slightly by manufacturer, but the concept is the same.
Step 3: Scan the QR Code
Your phone will activate the camera. Point it at the QR code from your ROAMR confirmation email. Alternatively, you can enter the activation code manually — just tap the manual entry option and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
Step 4: Label Your Plan
Your phone will ask you to label the new plan. We recommend naming it something clear like "ROAMR Japan" or "Travel Data." This makes it easy to identify when switching between plans later.
Step 5: Activate When Ready
You can install the eSIM before your trip and activate it when you land. Just go to your cellular settings, select the ROAMR plan, toggle it on, and make sure data roaming is enabled for that line. You should see a network connection within seconds.
Pro Tips
Install your eSIM while still on home WiFi so you are not scrambling at the airport. Keep your primary line active for calls and texts while using the eSIM for data only. If traveling to multiple countries, check if a regional plan (like our Europe or Asia packages) covers all your stops — it is usually cheaper than buying separate country plans.
Troubleshooting
If the QR code does not scan, try entering the details manually. If the plan does not activate, ensure data roaming is turned on for the eSIM line. Still stuck? Our support team is available 24/7 and can walk you through it in minutes.
